NEW YORK CITY, NY — June 25, 2025 — In a resounding victory, Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani swept the Democratic mayoral primary last night, making history as the first American-Muslim and South Asian candidate to secure a city-wide nomination for New York City’s highest office. Riding a wave of unprecedented grassroots energy and small-dollar donations, Mamdani’s win sets the stage for a transformative general-election fight on November 4, 2025.
Basim Elkarra, Executive Director of CAIR Action, emphasized how grassroots power fueled the win:
"From Astoria to Flatbush, we helped to mobilize faith, family, and fierce determination to shatter every turnout record tonight. Our community proved that when Muslim New Yorkers organize, we don’t just participate—we lead. This victory belongs to every community that has long been overlooked and signals a new era of unapologetic representation at City Hall."
The coalition behind Mamdani’s win spans Muslims, Jews, Black and Brown communities,Gen Z organizers, immigrant families, artists, and working families—reflecting the city’s vibrant diversity. This is more than a political win–it is a triumph for every young person who dared to believe their voice matters, every mosque overlooked by past administrations, and every New Yorker who dreams of a city that works for us all.
The general election will take place Tuesday, November 4, 2025. We urge New Yorkers to register, volunteer, and vote to "finish what we started.”
