CAIR Action New Jersey Commends Senators Andy Kim and Cory Booker for Opposing H.R. 23, the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act

PATERSON, NJ – 1/29/2024 – CAIR Action New Jersey commends Senator Andy Kim and Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey for their crucial votes against the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act (H.R. 23). This bill, which sought to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigating or prosecuting U.S. or allied officials, represented a dangerous rejection of international accountability and the rule of law.

By opposing H.R. 23, Senators Kim and Booker took a stand for justice, human rights, and the fundamental principle that no individual or government should be above international law. The ICC plays a critical role in holding perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable, and attempts to obstruct its work undermine global efforts to uphold justice and prevent impunity.

“We thank Senators Kim and Booker for standing on the side of justice and international accountability,” said Ali Aljarrah, Senior Advisor for CAIR Action NJ. “Their votes send a clear message that the United States should not shield itself or its allies from legitimate investigations into potential war crimes. Upholding human rights and the rule of law should be a bipartisan priority.”

CAIR Action urges all elected officials to support international justice mechanisms and reject efforts to weaken institutions designed to hold perpetrators of atrocities accountable. We remain committed to advocating for policies that align with our nation’s values of justice, human rights, and global cooperation.
