WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/11/2024 – CAIR Action calls on all members of Congress to oppose H.R. 9495, a bill that poses significant risks to nonprofit organizations, colleges, and activists. If enacted, the bill would grant the executive branch expansive authority to investigate and penalize organizations based on vague security concerns, jeopardizing their ability to operate and potentially chilling free expression.
HR 9495 has sparked widespread concern from over 120 civil society organizations who warn that the bill could unfairly target nonprofits. With this sweeping authority, the executive branch could impose punitive measures on organizations simply for advocating for policy changes, dissent, or engaging in protests.
Basim Elkarra, Executive Director of CAIR Action, voiced strong concerns: “This bill would set a dangerous precedent, allowing the government to silence and disband organizations on a whim, with no real oversight or acccountability. Our representatives must recognize that HR 9495 is not a security measure—it’s a direct threat to our First Amendment rights.”
CAIR Action urges Congress to reject this harmful legislation and stands with civil rights organizations nationwide in defending the right to free speech and association.
