(WASHINGTON, DC – July 21, 2024) – CAIR Action, one of the nation’s leading Muslim 501(c)4 political organizations, today welcomed President Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential Election and called on Vice President Harris to chart her own course on Gaza, and other key issues, in order to win back the support of American Muslims and other voters needed to defeat Donald Trump.
In a statement, CAIR Action Executive Director Basim Elkarra said:
“Supporting genocide is a moral failing and an untenable political stance. President Biden’s withdrawal is a step towards accountability and justice. We urge Vice President Kamala Harris, and any candidate who may pursue the presidency, to address the concerns of voters who abandoned President Biden by demanding an immediate and permanent end to the genocide, implementing a weapons embargo, and pledging to take specific, concrete steps to end U.S. support for the oppression and occupation of the Palestinian people.
“Only then can the Democratic Party expect to win back the support of all the voters it needs to defeat Donald Trump.”
Elkarra added, “It is imperative, now more than ever, for the Democratic Party to listen to its base and for the party’s nominee to oppose genocide, champion human rights, advocate for civil rights and religious freedom, and pursue justice for all, both here and abroad.”
President Biden dropping out of the presidential race underscores a profound moment of political clarity and responsibility for the President and the Democratic Party. President Biden lost key support from voters months before the debate, due to his support for the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
More than half a million Americans voted ‘uncommitted’ or submitted blank ballots during the presidential primaries, showing the widespread anger that threatened President Biden’s viability in key swing states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The vast majority of Americans, and over 80 percent of Democrats, support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. So must the new Democratic nominee.
CAIR Action is a 501(c)4 organization. Our mission is to engage, educate, and mobilize Muslim voters, train emerging leaders, and champion policy priorities that enhance the well-being and representation of Muslim communities. Through our work, we aim to foster a more equitable and inclusive democratic society where the rights and voices of Muslims are acknowledged and respected.
